Monday Night Football

Monday, September 22, 2008

A short trip for East Webster turned into a long night for West Oktibbeha as the Wolverines handed the Timberwolves a 36-0 region loss on Monday night.

The game was moved to Monday due to lightning from the storms that moved into the area this past Friday.  East Webster will have to quickly turn their focus for their Friday night match-up against the Calhoun City Wildcats.

East Webster defense held West Oktibbeha to negative yards total offense and has yet to give up an offensive touchdown this season.

THIS IS THE FINAL WEEK OF 7:30 KICKOFFS!!!!!!!!

In softball news, Natalie Frenn hit her eighth home run on the season in Ingomar’s 6-3 victory over North Pontotoc.

Closing of the Cathedral marks beginning of heart breaking trend

The Yankees closed the doors on The House That Ruth Built with a 7-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

As fans celebrated what appears to be the final victory at Yankee Stadium, I couldn’t help but see the final out in The House That Ruth Built as being the last breath of what sports will never be again — pure.

Not being a baseball fan it wasn’t until tonight that I realize just how amazing it was to have been able to take in a game at Yankee Stadium.

The Cathedral was the site of what was once one of college football’s most intense and storied rivalries between Notre Dame and Army.

Yankee Stadium was the site for the “Game of the Century” when Notre Dame and Army finished in a 0-0 tie in 1946.  It was the site of the Knute Rockne’s infamous “win one for the Gipper” speech that sparked an Irish 12-6 win over Army in 1928 and the following year the game drew just over 79,000 fans.

Notre Dame played 24 games at Yankee Stadium and finished with a record of 15-6-3 and the rivals played their final game at the stadium in 1961 — remember I said I’m not a baseball fan.

All jokes aside, there will never be another stadium with the same majestic history and influence on the world of sports as Yankee Stadium.

Once the doors officially open to The Other Stadium (I refuse to call it Yankee Stadium) it will be the epitome of what is becoming a heart breaking trend of replacing the purity of athletic competition with the love of money  — the cost of box seats jump from $250 to as much $2500 along with Hard Rock Cafe being rumored to be added in the stadium.

How a true Yankee or baseball fan could step foot in the new stadium is beyond me!

Freelon on track for record breaking season… again

Senior running back Richard Freelon had a big night rushing for 187 yards and the game winning touchdown in the Bruce Trojans 20-17 overtime victory over fellow 2A power Baldwyn Bearcats.

The 2007 W07BN Offensive Player of the Year scored on a 10-yard run for the win on the Trojans’ first possession in overtime after a Cayse Copeland field goal gave the Bearcats a 17-14 lead, but this isn’t the first time the senior has experienced the thrill of overtime heroics.

As a junior, Freelon scored two game winning touchdowns in overtime.  In the season opener he scored on a 1-yard run in a 19-16 win over 5A DeSoto Central and later in the season he scored on a 10-yard run in the third overtime to give Bruce a 40-34 win over the very same Baldwyn Bearcat squad.

In 2007 Richard rushed for 2,533 yards and 32 touchdowns on 316 carries and through four games last season he had complied 810 yards and 13 touchdowns on 119 carries — this season the numbers are “down” for Freelon (please note the sarcasm).

Through his first four games this season he has rushed for 733 yards and 6 touchdowns on 61 carries all while opposing defenses take on the Trojans with an agenda to stop Freelon.  I will do the math for you, that’s only 77 fewer yards on 58 less carries — to call that impressive would be an understatement.

Vardaman 30 Okolona 6
by Jeremy Kennedy

Vardaman capitalized on several Okolona turnovers to win going away, 30-6.  The Rams defense was the story as they pressured the Chieftan QB Garth into multiple interceptions, and prevented scores three times inside the 20-yard line.

Vardaman got on the board in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead when the defense recorded a sack and a fumble inside Okolona’s 10-yard line.  Ruth scored on the QB keeper from 1-yard out.

Okolona scored their only points of the night on a fumble recovery inside the 5-yard line.  Garth connected on the TD pass, but the PAT was blocked, and that was the closest the Chieftans would get all night.

After the defense settled in, it was time for the offense of Vardaman to take control.  Impressive outings from Humphries and Barnette late in the 2nd half finally opened up the game and allowed the Rams to cruise.

Due to weather changes to weekend schedule

Friday, September 19, 2008

Here are the changes to the weekend lineup due to the weather.

Hebron Christian drop pair of home heart breakers

Friday, September 19, 2008

In pee-wee football action it appeared that the Hebron Christian Eagles tied their game with Immanuel Christian Rams when Landon Hill caught a Ty Long pass after it was tipped by a Ram defender, but an official nearly 15 yards away from the play ruled the pass incomplete with the encouragement of the Immanuel coaches.

The Eagles eventually turned the ball over on downs allowing Immanuel to kneel their way to a 12-6 victory.

In junior varsity action the Eagles fought their way back into the contest 14-8 after a Preston McKee 7-yard touchdown run and P.K. Pearson found Drew Harrell for the two-point conversion.  A Ram turnover saw Hebron move the ball to the five yard line with a chance to win the game in the final minutes of the game.

The Eagles went to the end zone on fourth and goal when the Ram defender knocked down the intended Eagle receiver before the ball got to him, but no flag was thrown on the play.  Two plays later Immanuel broke off a 97-yard touchdown against a detested Eagle defense to take the 20-8 victory.

Preston McKee rushed for 21 yards and one touchdown while P.K. Pearson was 6 of 10 passing for 103 yards and a two-point conversion.

Smithville wins thriller, Ingomar still top seed

Friday, September 19, 2008

The Lady Noles (17-3, 9-1) scored five runs in the fifth inning to pick up a 10-6 win over the Houlka Lady Wildcats and then got a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to knock off the Ingomar Lady Falcons 4-3.

Tuesday – Houlka took a 3-2 lead into the fifth inning when Brandy Davis scored on a single to right by Lynndon Northington and Whitney Fears broke the 3-3 tie when she scored on a Jordan Northington single to right. Smithville tacked on two more runs in the inning to take a 7-3 lead.

The Lady Wildcats rallied to plate three runs in the sixth, but Smithville answered with a trio of runs in the top of the seventh when Kelsi Watson drew a bases loaded walk to plate Jordan and Courtney Phillips ripped a two-run single down the third baseline.

Thursday – Smithville and Ingomar went into the final frame tied at 3-3 when Watson led off the inning with a double and advance to third on a sacrifice fly by Kami Robertson before scoring on a two-out walk-off single by Meagan Whitehead to give the Lady Noles a crucial 4-3 victory.

The Lady Noles had to beat Ingomar by more than six runs to overtake the Lady Falcons for the top seed in the upcoming playoffs, but the door is not closed on the all-important top seeding. An Ingomar loss to Houlka on Tuesday or Tremont on Thursday would put Smithville in the number one spot.

Smithville will close out the season with non-region match-ups at Aberdeen on Thursday, home against Nettleton next Monday, and will close out the season against the Pontotoc Lady Warriors on the 2nd of October.
