Monroe360: Panthers stun Louisville in season finale

Saturday, October 31, 2009

AMORY – Louisville had some Amory fans leaving the already near-empty, and soaked, stands at Longenecker Field. In the first 35 seconds of the second half, Amory made the ones who stayed glad.

Trailing 14-0, Amory senior Frank Carter returned the second half’s opening kick 85 yards, the Panthers took the momentum and eventually the game, a 19-14 Division 4-4A upset to close the regular season against the reigning 3A champs.

Seconds after the return, Louisville turned the ball back over to Amory when Channing French >>> click here to read more from Brandon Speck.

South Panola has no problem with Starkville in 51-7 victory

Saturday, October 31, 2009

BATESVILLE — The South Panola Tigers went to work in the rain and were not in the mood to let Starkville break their six-game winning streak.

Qyendarius Griffin blocked a punt and recovered a fumble that led to a pair of South Panola touchdowns in the Tigers’ 51-7 win over the Yellow Jackets this past Friday night in Batesville.

Temario Strong recovered Giffin’s blocked punt in the end zone to give the South Panola (9-1, 6-0 Region 1-6A) a 14-0 after taking a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Taylor Rotenberry late in the first quarter.

Hunter Lawrence scored on a 1-yard scoring plunge and thirty seconds later Matthew Brown scored after Griffin scooped up a Starkville (3-8, 3-4) fumble and returned it 18 yards to the Starkville four yard line.

Nicholas Parker bullied his way for a 26-yard score on the opening drive of the second quarter and the rest of the night belonged to the Tigers as he finished his short night of work with 122 yards rushing on 14 carries.

South Panola fans got a glimpse of the future when back-up QB Kendrick Martin weaved his way past numerous would-be defenders for a 37-yard touchdown run halfway through the third quarter to give the Tigers a 41-0 lead.

Nolan Parker added a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter before Starkville finally got on the board on a 35-yard run from Lakendrick Barlow to make it a 44-7 contest. The Tigers final score of the contest came on a blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone.

The Yellow Jackets rushed for 59 yards mainly against members of the second and third team defense. Jaquez Johnson passed for 22 yards and an interception on 1-of-11 passing on the night.

The Tigers grounded out 311 yards rushing with 14 different players sharing 50 carries while Lee Self passed for 44 yards on 5-of-10 passing in the victory.

South Panola will host DeSoto Central (3-6, 0-5) next Thursday while Starkville will travel to Columbus (3-6, 2-3) on Friday to close out the regular season.

Calhoun City clicks in 28-12 win over rival Bruce

Friday, October 30, 2009

BRUCE — Junior quarterback JR Jennings threw for 189 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the Calhoun City Wildcats’ 28-12 win over rival Bruce Trojans in the 60th meeting of the Skuna River Rivalry.

Calhoun City (6-5, 5-1 Region 1-2A) set the tone early when Aaron Thompson returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead after Raheem Roberson added the extra point.

“That was a big play for us,” said Calhoun City head coach Perry Liles about the opening kickoff return, “it helped us set the tone and gave the guys a lot of confidence that carried over throughout the rest of the game.”

“They are who we thought they were,” said Bruce head coach James Ray about Calhoun City. “They are big up front and real physical on both side of the ball and I think they did a good job of controlling the line to move the ball against us and disrupt of game plan on offense.”

Bruce (2-8, 2-4) answered with a 14-yard touchdown run by Shaq Bush, but a missed extra point left it a 7-6 contest.

Jennings found Avery Hill on a 25-yard scoring strike and Demarius Howard for a 49-yard pass to take a 21-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. Bruce fought back with a 3-yard run by Bush to make it 21-12 score at halftime after an Aaron Thompson interception in the end zone halted a Trojan drive late in the second quarter.

“We had opportunities,” said Ray, “I thought we were kind of shell shocked coming out in a big game with a big atmosphere. We got behind early and just couldn’t overcome.”

Calhoun City picked off four Trojan passes — all occurring inside Wildcat territory — Howard had two interceptions while Thompson and Tray Pratt each picked off a pass for the Cats.

“Our secondary is really strong. We’ve got some guys that have been playing there for a long time and that’s one of the strengths of our defense,” said Liles.

Howard scored on a 2-yard plunge into the end zone with under two minutes left in the third quarter to give the Wildcats the 28-12 victory. Howard finished with 60 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries along with 64 yards and a score on two catches. Thompson rushed for 57 yards on three carries. Hill had one catch for 25 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 25 yards on seven carries.

Nick Smith led the Trojans’ offensive attack with 93 rushing yards on 12 carries while Bush added 71 yards and two touchdowns on 9 carries. Davis Brown threw for 104 yards and four interceptions on 7-of-20 passing. Rod Harris had two catches for 14 yards and also reeled in an interception on defense.

Bruce leads the Skuna River series 36-22-2. Calhoun City has won three-straight against the Trojans.

Calhoun City locked up the number two seed in Region 1-2A and will host Mound Bayou JFK while Bruce finishes fourth in the region and will travel to West Bolivar to open the Class 2A North State playoffs.

Monroe360: Aberdeen claims 2-3A title, Tacker & Freeman update

Monroe360: Aberdeen claims 2-3A title

ABERDEEN – The Daily Journal’s No. 2 ranked Class 3A Aberdeen Bulldogs got off to a slow start Thursday, but a fast finish wrapped up the Division 2-3A title and a top seed when the playoff begin a week from today.

Senior running back Jamerson Love, a Mississippi State commitment, scored on a 20 yard pass from Aaron Andrews as Aberdeen led 8-0 at halftime, then rushed for two more scores on runs of 50 and 58 yards in the second half in a 30-6 win against the No. 4 Nettleton Tigers.

Moved to Thursday because of heavy rain expected today, it was the fifth time Aberdeen (9-2, 5-0) has held an opponent to single digits, two shutouts.

“I can’t say enough about the defense. We gave up one play the whole ballgame,” Aberdeen coach Chris Duncan said, “The defense was dominant all night against a good offensive team.”

Nettleton (8-3, 3-2), which gets the third seed and will hit the road >>> click here to read more from Brandon Speck.

Jeff Terrill resigns as head football coach at ICC

Thursday, October 29, 2009

Will Kollmeyer/Director of Marketing & Sports Information

IMG_3085Itawamba Community College is in the market for a new head football coach after Jeff Terrill resigned earlier today.  Terrill has been at the helm of the Indians program the last eight years and compiled a 38-36 record.  In fact, his team’s won 24 out of 29 regular season games during a stretch where Itawamba was the only program in the state to have qualified for the playoffs four straight years.

“I felt very blessed and humbled to be the head football coach at ICC,” said an emotional Terrill after he meet with his assistant coaches this morning.  “I truly want to express our (families) gratitude to the College’s administration, faculty, staff, all of our former coaches and players and for that matter, the entire ICC family for making this time at Itawamba so very special.”

ICC athletic director Carrie Ball-Williamson accepted Terrill’s resignation and thanked him for his hard work through the years in representing the College.

“I’d like to express my gratitude to Coach Terrill, who has done a very good job of showing leadership thru the good and tough times during his eight years as head football coach at ICC,” said Ball-Williamson, who added a search will begin immediately to find Terrill’s successor.  “We appreciate everything Jeff has done for this program, so it is with respect and sadness that we accept his resignation.”

During four of the seasons at Itawamba, Terrill, who is a Noxubee County native, was in charge of the Indians defense, which was a regular member of the nation’s top 25 in total defense.

“The last eight years have been a great time in my life, both professionally and personally,” added Terrill in a prepared statement. “It’s been a great place to coach and live.”

A wrinkle has been added to the importance of a Skuna River Rivalry victory for Bruce

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Here is another wrinkle to the Skuna River Rivarly game tomorrow night.

Brandon Speck of the Monroe Journal is reporting that Walnut’s do-it-all athlete Shaquille Perry could be entering their game against the Hatley Tigers less than 100% tomorrow night >>> click here to read more about a possible season-altering injury update on Perry.

While the rumors health of Perry are yet to be proven, the Bruce Trojans appear to be the team that could ultimately suffer from the possible injury.

A win by Hatley mixed with a loss by Bruce would give all three schools a 2-3 region record resulting in a three-way tie between the Tigers, Trojans, and Wildcats — invoking a tie-breaking system that would put Hatley and Walnut into the playoffs and Bruce on the hardwood.

Bruce defeated Hatley 19-18, but dropped a 34-12 (-12 MHSSA max points) decision to Walnut to put the Trojans at the minus-eleven mark. Hatley is currently at minus-one and Walnut is currently sitting at the plus-twelve mark. The Tigers would have to beat the Wildcats by seven or more to overtake Walnut in the three-way tie breaking point-system. The Wildcats would earn the number four seed after the tie breaker would revert back to the head-to-head competition.

The 60th edition of the Skuna River Rivalry

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

There will be no shortage of emotions at Trojan Field Thursday night when Bruce and Calhoun City meet for the 60th edition of the Skuna River Rivalry after a two-year hiatus and like always their are playoff implications on the line.

Calhoun City (5-5, 3-2 Region 1-2A) currently sits at the number two seed in the region, but a loss by to Bruce (2-7, 2-2) could cause the Wildcats to slip into the third or fourth spot and would have to hit the road to take on West Bolivar or Hollandale-Simmons in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Trojans could climb into the number two spot with a victory by 12 or more and would host either Mound Bayou JFK or Greenville-O’Bannon next week.

Home field advantage, disadvantage

The Trojans hold an 18-11-1 edge over the Wildcats when the games have been played in Bruce having won four out of the last six official meetings at Trojan Field.

Before their 26-7 victory at Bruce, Calhoun City’s last victory on the other side of the river came in 1999 when the Cats handed the Trojans a 20-7 loss.

While history is on the side of the Trojans they are 0-4 on the season when playing at home, the road has not been kind to Calhoun City.

The Cats are 1-4 away from the friendly confines of the Bone Yard after picking up their first road victory over Walnut this past Friday night.

Breaking down the rivalry

Bruce and Calhoun City have combined for 464 wins, 217 loses, 1 tie, 38 trips to the playoffs, 10 state championship appearances and two Class 2A state championships since 1985, but the Trojans have the upper hand when it comes to the tradition-rich Skuna River Rivalry.

Bruce leads the all-time series 36-21-2, but Calhoun City has won the last two regular season meetings. The series has been decided by an average of 12.8 points since it started in 1930.

The Wildcats won the first ever meeting 60-6, the largest margin of victory in the series, but the Trojans have the longest winning streak in the series with eight-straight games from 1972-1979.

The Trojans have won seven out of the last ten meetings in a run of games that have been decided by an average of ten points. They have also won three out of the last five meetings where the games have been determined by an average of 7.6 points.

Only seven games were played in the developing stages of the rivalry and was not played for eight years while many brave men in the county severed the country during World War II.

The series was renewed in 1959 and played for 48-straight seasons before scheduling conflicts discontinued the series in 2007 despite numerous efforts by both schools to make arrangements to continue one of the state’s top rivalries. A spring scrimmage was set up to continue the rivalry, but interest was lost in the games before Bruce head coach James Ray came up with the idea to renew the rivalry with an alumni game in place of the scrimmage this past April.

“I’ve always wished I could play this game one more time because it’s a classic game,” Bruce alum Danyell Shaw said about the chance of playing in alumni game.

The game proved to be an overwhelming success as an estimated crowd of over 1,500 attended the first-ever alumni game that saw 64 former players battle to an ironic but fitting 12-12 finish despite players wanting to continue the game until a winner was determined.

“You’d love to win, but you still hate to lose to Bruce… it’s bitter-sweet,” Calhoun City alumni and assistant coach Robert Fox said about the 12-12 finish after the game.

Defining the rivalry

Every great rivalry has a game that defines just what makes the series special.

The Skuna River Rivalry defining game happened in 1996 when an estimated crowd of 3,500 fans that braved a constant down pour to see a field goal help Bruce defeat Calhoun City 10-7 in overtime to earn the Class 2A North State Championship after the Wildcats dominated the Trojans in the regular season meeting in a 22-0 victory.

Bruce defeated the Ackerman 15-6 to earn their first state championship and left Calhoun City fans with a bitter taste in their mouth as they watched the Trojans celebrate their championship.

Calhoun City has played for two championships (06, 08) while Bruce has failed to return to the main stage since 1996, but while many Trojan fans made the trip down I-55 to cheer on the Wildcats — loyalty eventually outweighed the support.

“I remember when Calhoun City started making their comeback (against East Marion in the 2006 Class 2A Championship) Bruce people started separating from the Calhoun City people,” said former Bruce Trojan Yarnell Marks.

“Before the game you could see blue and orange mixed together, but by the time the game was over all the blue was in one group away from everybody wearing orange. We still cheered for them, but deep down we didn’t want them to be able to brag about having one more state championship than us.”

Renewing the rivalry

When Calhoun City move into the 1A classification their 10-team region schedule limited their opportunity to play Bruce and after exhausted efforts the series was eventually put on hold.

It was estimated that both programs lost an estimated thirty-thousand dollars to their budget in the two year absence of the game, but when the crowd pack Trojan Field financial earnings will be the furthest thing from the players mind.

“You don’t have to say anything other than Bruce and Calhoun City,” said Bruce head coach James Ray who will be coaching in his fourth Skuna River Rivalry. “With the two year layoff it’s kind of a weird feeling right now, but there’s no doubt come Thursday night when the lights flip on it’s going to be a heck of a game.”

Coach Perry Liles will be entering the rivalry for the first time as a head coach, but knows the history of the rivalry and the importance of keeping the players focused on the task of taking care of business when the whistle blows Thursday night.

“This is a game that you can’t pick the winner,” said Calhoun City head coach Perry Liles. “It’s exciting to be a part of a rivalry like this and anything you play anybody across county it’s important to practice well to get prepared for it.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Trojan Field, but the highly anticipated large crowd is expected to starting to filling the stadium two hours before the game starts.
