Good National Brandon Speck Day from GoreSports

Saturday, January 31, 2009

Not a lot of time to write a blog today as I am running late for the Roberton’s Sportswear Challenge in Ingomar — I think it is the shock from Smithville boys beating Ingomar last night that still has me thrown for a loop.

Speaking of the Robertson’s Challenge here is the schedule:

11:00 – Itawamba AHS vs Briarcrest
12:30 – East Union vs Hickory Flat
2:00 – Pine Grove vs South Pontotoc
3:30 – West Union vs Tishomingo County
5:00 – New Site vs Coldwater
6:30 – Tupelo vs HW Byers
8:00 – Ingomar vs Nettleton

It’s only $5.00 to see all seven games and the gate goes to Relay for Life – great day for a great cause.

On the agenda today:

You guessed it, the Robertson’s Sportswear Challenge.

Also, happy birthday to the Specktacular One — Brandon Speck.

Fan Poll: Which game will be the best?

Which game will steal the show at this year’s Robertson Sportswear Challenge?

On the links with GoreSports

Friday, January 30, 2009

“On the Links” is something Brad Locke started with his Mississippi State Sports Blog that I really like and find it a great way of squeezing a lot of information into one reading — so I hope he don’t mind if I borrow his idea for my blog as well.

Darrell Robertson always looks for the best matchups when he’s scheduling opponents for his annual Robertson’s Sportswear Lady Challenge.  This season is no exception.  Robertson, an advocate of girls high school sports, has lined up some dandy matchups for Saturday’s seven-game event at Ingomar High School’s gym.  The headliner – worth the five bucks admission alone – is the 6:30 p.m. game between two of the state’s top teams – defending 2A state champion H.W. Byers (24-1) and 5A Tupelo (19-4).

Gene Phelps: Byers, Tupelo headline Robertson’s Challenge

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that former MSU football coach Sylvester Croom will join the St. Louis Rams, probably as a running backs coach.

Jason Hubbard isn’t a big scorer for Murrah’s basketball team, but the senior guard knew this was one shot – even with the game on the line – he just had to take… Hubbard’s closely-guarded 10-footer with 3 seconds left in overtime Tuesday night lifted Murrah to an emotional 77-75 victory over Jim Hill before a near-capacity crowd at Northwest Jackson Middle School. The game was the first for the Mustangs since junior guard Chris Ulmer died in a one-vehicle wreck last Friday near the school’s campus in the Belhaven area.

Bearcats 73 Bulldogs 61: Statement Made!

Friday, January 30, 2009

All season long the Bearcats have been considered a good basketball team, but still had lingering questions about their ability to compete with other top teams in North Mississippi.  After leading the defending 3A State Champion Aberdeen Bulldogs from opening tip to final horn those questions no longer linger.

Read more about the Bearcats’ win from Brandon Speck of the Monroe County Journal and Gene Phelps of the Northeast MS Daily Journal.

Coach Roy Williams (right) talks with recent signee Leslie McDonal in New Albany.

I am officially announcing on my website that I am suing Brandon Speck for damages due to laughter from his most recent opinion column about North Carolina head coach Roy Williams impact on Northeast Mississippi when he made a stop at the New Albany Kiwanis Hotbed Classic.

This article could only be made better if it was a video for us to watch Speck tell the story only like the Speck-tacular One can!

Click here to read – Opinion: Williams’ visit embarrasses the rest us

I will admit there is a lot of truth in this opinion column, but the main point I was more disappointed in was the lack of professionalism shown by one of the refs during this game.

Let me start off by saying I understand protecting the main attraction because that’s who people paid to see, but  for one ref to act like he did during this game is unacceptable.  Every time said ref came near Coach Williams he diverted to the antics of a third grade school girl giggling and blushing at a boy she is crushing on every time he was near the hall of fame coach.

My dad once told me… if you are paid to do a job you had better do it.

I use to think there was not a lot of deep earth-shattering thought put into those words of wisdom, but maybe I was wrong?

On the agenda today:

Basketball, basketball, basketball!  We have a couple of games on tap for W07BN Sports tonight.

Jeremy Kennedy and Steven Criss will be at Shannon for their game against Pontotoc while the basketball gurus Steve Whitten and Ryan Whittington will be at Vardaman for their non-division game against in-county rival Calhoun City.

As for me it depends on how I feel and votes from the fan poll on my whereabouts tonight, but I may stay home in order to get better rested up for a full day of basketball at the Robertson’s Sportswear/Renasant Bank Relay for Life Challenge at Ingomar on Saturday.

On a personal note: Happy birthday to Mrs Wanda Edwards of Ingomar.

Fan Poll: Where to go Friday night?

Thursday, January 29, 2009

If I am feeling better and make it through the game tonight in Baldwyn — where should I go to cover a game on Friday?

I will check the votes at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, but to make it fair I have made the poll where you can only vote once!

W07BN Sports will be on hand for Pontotoc at Shannon and Calhoun City at Vardaman tomorrow night as well.

Good Thursday morning from GoreSports

Thursday, January 29, 2009

header_31I hope your Wednesday was far better than mine and your Thursday is off to a better start than mine as well.  I’d also like to take the time to thank Mr. Ricky McCollum of WNAU for stepping in to take care of the second half of the boys game for me.

I started feeling pretty bad during the Ingomar and Calhoun City boys game Tuesday night and am not feeling much better today, but here is something that surely don’t help me feel any better when thinking about the future of our kids and the state educational system.

I’ve had a chance to talk to various coaches and administrators in passing about the recent meeting with State Superintendent Hank Bounds and after their concerns expressed over some of his ideas expressed during the meeting my opinion on Bounds has went from respect to distaste.

Bounds views seem to suggest he sees very little, if any, importance in the role athletics play in our state school system.

Brandon Speck of the Monroe County Journal said it best, “I won’t say athletics is more important than academics, but I also won’t say academics are more important than athletics when it comes to kids getting an education… they are basically on a 50/50 playing field.”

Brandon was right, academics and athletics are equally important to and dependent on each other.

Players have to be academically eligible to participate in sports.  That means they have to take care of business in the classroom as well as in their respective field of competition thus meaning they will get a high school education and eventual diploma.  Take away athletics and the academics will greatly suffer.  It is a proven fact that sports have been a great tool in curbing what was a rapidly growing dropout problem across the state and we all know student-athletes that are still in school or have finished school just because of the opportunity athletics afforded them.

If Mr. Bounds feels a need to make some adjustments with athletics in the state to save money he needs to start by cleaning up the corrupt, money-hungry establishment known as the Mississippi High School Activities Association.

Once he does that more coaches and administrators would be more open minded to some of the suggestions he has for the future of the state’s educational system.  Until then I hope he finds life to be a living hell trying to employ his changes.

On the agenda for Thursday:

If I start feeling a little better later in the day I hope to cover the Aberdeen at Baldwyn game tonight, but until then I am getting back in the bed.

An additional note, the Calhoun City vs HW Byers game scheduled for Saturday has been canceled.
